Matt stared at the chalkboard. What did all that gibberish mean?

“Fractions.” “Algebra.” “Rational Approximations to the Square Foot.”

Standing at the front, one of his teammates was working on a problem. To the right, the redheaded class genius was solving his own. Matt was happy that Brock had scored high in health—good for him—but this math stuff was on a whole other level.

Go, Bobcat. You can do this.

To everyone’s surprise, Robert Catt circled his answer first and sauntered back to his desk, tossing his marker to Mrs. Carter on his way. She caught it, shot him a look, then glanced back to the solution on the board: 6.773.

The redheaded kid peeked over. Did a double take. In stunned silence, Mrs. Carter and Genius Boy turned and watched Bobcat settle into his seat.

Matt felt a grin spread across his face. He figured if his teammate could do it, he could too. The next time the teacher called for a volunteer, he’d pop up his hand and face this challenge head-on.

And if she didn’t call on him, fine. He’d rather be back out on the gridiron anyway. Practice was only a few hours from now.
